How to Report a Code Violation in Miami-Dade County
Building codes are there to ensure the safety and well-being of the public within a city, and if you feel like a property is potentially infringing on these things, then you have a right to report it. But exactly how do you do that? Here's our step-by-step guide for reporting code violations in Miami-Dade County.
Step 1: Collect Information
By collecting information, you are gathering evidence of the violation. The type of information you should collect is the:
- Address of the possible violation
- Time of the incident (how long has the issue been happening or when does the issue generally happen)
- Take a picture/s (colored) of the issue if possible
- Write down a detailed description of the issue/incident
- Name the possible violation
Some examples of violations are improper bathroom venting, encroaching on your property zone, graffiti, unsafe structures, etc.)
Step 2: Report the Issue to Code Compliance
- During business hours, call the Department of Code Compliance at (305) 416-2087. They are open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- During after-hours, call the Code Compliance Hotline at (786) 457-0995. They are open from Monday to Thursday, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. On weekends, they are available from 5:00 pm on Friday to 5:00 pm on Sunday.
- You may also call 311. They are a helpful source for City and County services.
- Or email Code Compliance at CodeCompliance@MiamiGov.com
After this, the city will send over an inspector, and he/she will write a report on the situation. If the problem does not seem to be getting fixed, you can also meet with a lawyer and have them assess the case and the actions you may take.
