Fires Caused By Electrical Code Violations
There have been a number of deadly fires in the recent years due to preexisting code violations. Vacant buildings attract squatters and are often have their electrical systems vandalized and start fires. Recently 2 firefighters died after a vacant building collapsed. Eight squatters died in a fire in Louisiana in a building that had been cited for electrical violations in the past. In N.Y.C. a man died in a residence that had been illegally converted into multiple dwellings, after being electrocuted by an ungrounded circuit. The day after the death, criminal charges were filed against the property owner.
Citizens often get angry at Code Enforcement officers because they feel they should use their property as they see fit and because compliance with the code Can get costly. Tragedies like these demonstrate why we have building codes and why strict code enforcement is necessary.
